Mayor Eric Adams announced in his “State of the City” address that Uber and Lyft will be required to switch to only electric vehicles by 2030
[1], a move designed to eliminate a major source of carbon emissions in the city.
The rule only applies to for-hire vehicles deemed “high-volume” by the city, which only includes Uber and Lyft
[2]. Both companies have already begun taking steps to incentivize their drivers to switch to electric vehicles, such as authorizing higher fares for drivers who use EVs. However, getting the millions of people who drive for Uber and Lyft to switch to electric vehicles will be no easy task
[3]. In addition, the mayor recently announced that the city would replace more than 900 gas guzzlers in the city vehicle feet with electric vehicles (EVs) and establish 315 EV charging stations across the five boroughs [2].
